Flyers captain sidelined indefinitely

October 31, 2005

Flyers Athletic Trainer and Strength and Conditioning Coach Jim McCrossin confirmed on Monday that Flyers captain and center Keith Primeau has sustained a concussion and is out of action indefinitely. Primeau did not play in the Flyer's 5-3 victory over the Ottawa Senators on Sunday night after not feeling well following a game in Carolina on October 28. [.continue.]

Looks like the captain won't be around for awhile.
So who gets to wear the C?
My vote is Gagne.

Johnsson is listed day to day with a pulled left groin.
I think his injury hurts the Flyers more than Primeau's, since he is one of our better defensemen.

Flyers get back on right track - beat senators 5-3

October 31, 2005

This time, the Flyers didn't blow a two-goal lead in the third period. They played responsibly with the puck, despite having just five defensemen. And they got timely saves as Robert Esche clearly outplayed Dominik Hasek.
It all culminated in a shocking 5-3 Flyers victory over the white-hot, speedy Senators last night at the Corel Centre. [.continue.]

Solid play by the Flyers, although the Senators playing the night before surely had an affect on their play. The biggest disappointment coming out of the game was Kim Johnsson leaving in the second period with a groin strain. Depending on how bad the injury is, the Flyers won’t have any healthy defenseman to scratch. Both Seidenburg and Therien will be getting ice time.
Desjardins picked up the most ice time with almost 28 minutes

"I talked before the game to every guy, and some guys stepped up. Jeff [Carter] played a great game. I talked to Robert [Esche] before the game, and he had maybe the best game of the year for us. When you lose your captain, your leader, you need guys to step up, and some guys did tonight." said Simon Gagne

Looks like he is earning the letter he is wearing.

Carter looked like he is getting into the groove, hopefully this will lead to more ice time. He did have the best face off percentage for the Flyers last night.

Stars for the game were Forsberg, Esche and Chara.

Watching the Flyers on Center Ice usually means watching the other teams broadcast, which can be quite, um, interesting. With the Flyers game being on UPN instead of Comcast, CI showed the Flyers feed. It was nice to listen to some 'unbiased' commentary for once. The really nice thing about it was no commercials. This got me thinking, I am paying for Center Ice, they should not be showing any commercials at all.

Flyers captain to sit out for precautionary reasons

October 30, 2005

Flyers center Keith Primeau is doubtful for Sunday’s game against the Ottawa Senators after missing the pre-game skate at the Corel Centre on Sunday morning. Primeau and Flyers Head Coach Ken Hitchcock talked with the media following the skate.
In nine games this season, the Flyers’ captain has one goal and six assists for seven points and six penalty minutes.
To take his place on the roster, the Flyers recalled center R.J. Umberger from the Philadelphia Phantoms. In eight games with the Phantoms, Umberger is leading the team in scoring with three goals and seven assists for 10 points and eight penalty minutes. [.continue.]

Going into the game tonight against a very strong Ottawa(8-1)team was going to be a challenge. The challenge got a bit tougher with Primeau sitting this one out. So apparently the elbow he took from Perezhogin had an affect on him.

I really don’t know anything about Umberger. I am a little surprised they called up a center, does the phantoms have no decent wings? With Sharp, Carter, Richards, Forsberg and Handzus listed as centers why not call up a wing and give Sharp and Carter some more ice time?

Hurricanes blow away Flyers’ chances 8-6

October 29, 2005

Just keep going. That's what the Flyers have been telling themselves in every game this season.
Whatever the situation, whatever the score, just keep going, because this truly is a "new NHL," and nothing is certain, no lead is safe, no outcome set before the final buzzer.
But the question this morning is, do they really believe that? [.continue.]

Apparently not.

If you give up 4 goals in the third period, you are never going to win.
Overall the Flyers did play well up until the third period. Even with giving up 7 goals, I still think Nittymaki played decent. The Flyer I was least impressed with was Hatcher. Does he think he is playing left wing or something? As slow as he is, he has no business going so deep into the offensive zone. Sorry, but there is no way he should be leading in minutes on ice time.

"You score six goals on the road, you expect to win. We made a lot of mistakes in the third period. We did some fundamental things wrong, and they scored on every opportunity." Said Hitchcock.

Yeah that about sums it up.

Three stars all Carolina with Staal, Stillman and Cullen.

Therien was a healthy scratch.

2005-06 Delta Dental Flyers Ice Team

October 29, 2005

Meet the 2005-06 Delta Dental Flyers Ice Team.
Ok, not actually 'meet' them, but it does have a nice pict.
Like I actually need a reason to watch more hockey.
All of them are quite attractive, but if I had to pick a favorite, would have to be Colleen.
Having ice girls seems to be a new trend with teams in the NHL.
Since the league has taken some of the fighting out of the game, why not have some fights between the ice girls from opposing teams between periods.
I’ll bring the jello.

Flyers climb out of hole to handle Brodeur, Devils

October 8, 2005

Even the best goalies on the planet can have a meltdown. We offer New Jersey's Martin Brodeur as an example.
On most nights, a 2-0 lead with Brodeur in net is nearly impossible to overcome. Last night, he allowed two soft goals in the final period as the Flyers rallied for a 5-2 victory at the Wachovia Center. [continue]

Flyers did play much better then opening night and Brodeur looked mortal in the second half of the game.
Primeau had more ice time this game and that’s a good thing. I say play him on the power play as well as the penalty kill. Tony just has a presence on the ice that is really felt.
Sharp played tonight with Radivojevic sitting out. I like Ravioli, I really do, but Sharp is a better all around player that wont take crap from anyone. Gotta play a guy like that.
Next game Toronto. Ah, get to play against Lindros in Toronto, that is if he makes it thru tonight's game against the Canadiens. With Sundin out for atleast 4 weeks, Lindros will have to step up.

Flyers Czechmated in opener

October 6, 2005

It was all there: an oval filled with fans wearing orange "Back Where We Belong" T-shirts, a national television audience, thundering applause to greet Peter the Great, even a penalty shot.
Hockey returned to the Wachovia Center last night for the first time since the May 2004 playoffs, after a yearlong lockout, as the Flyers faced the New York Rangers. The ingredients for opening-night success were there. [continue]

The Rangers did all they could to lose the game in the first two periods with bad penalties. My favorite Rangers penalty was Jagr playing the puck while still on the bench. That was just funny.
The Flyers were just out played and out hustled the entire game and Esche gave up two potentially soft goals. Just having skill does not mean you don’t have to play hard, I think the Flyers realized that after the game. Forsberg looked good especially on the power play.
Seidenberg left the game in the second period after being boarded. OLN commentator said a little later he had a concussion, but I don’t see anything about it today. With Hatcher out for two more games, they might have to call someone up.
Flyers host the Devils on Friday and they better step it up, the Devils looked excellent in their opener.
