Wordpress Upgrade
December 26, 2005
I have upgraded Word Press, the blog software that runs this site, to version 2.0.
The site was unavailable for maybe 15 minutes. The process seemed to go quite smoothly. Most of the changes were ‘under the hood’, so most everything should look the same.
Flyers in Florida Dec 26
December 26, 2005
The Flyers play the Panthers in Florida tonight after having a couple days off for Christmas. The Flyers are 2-0 against the Panthers this season and are looking to extend their winning streak to three games.
The Flyers are coming off a 5-4 win against the Penguins on December 23. The Panthers are coming off a 4-3 loss to the Hurricanes on December 23.
Injuries for the Flyers include Keith Primeau, Joni Pitkanen, Eric Desjardins, Ryan Ready, Turner Stevenson and Robert Esche.
Injuries for the Panthers include Anthony Stewart and Branislav Mezei.
This is the second of an eleven game road trip for the Flyers, longest in team history. Thanks to Disney On Ice which will occupy the Wachovia center the next few weeks.
Flyers comback in Pittsburg 5-4
December 24, 2005
The Flyers led, loss the lead then came back to beat the Penguins 5-4.
Simon Gagne and Dennis Seidenberg each picked up a power play goal. Peter Forsberg scored twice. Mike Knuble scored the game winning goal, extending his goal scoring streak to five games.
Seidenberg’s goal was his first of the season.
The first half of the game was rather slow, not much energy. Halfway thru the second period down by 3 goals the Penguins picked it up and scoring 4 straight, 2 goals in the second and 2 more in the third. At this point I figured the Flyers just ran out of gas after playing a tough game the night before in Philly. But the Penguins let up just enough to let the Flyers back in the game. Forsberg scored around the 15 minute mark of the third, Knuble scored about a minute later.
One of the things we've got to do better is develop the attitude when we've got people down we've got to keep putting the hammer to them. – Ken Hithcock
I agree
Both young goaltenders, Fleury and Niittymaki had average nights letting in some soft goals.
There was one fight in the game, Ben Eager and Matt Murley. Not much to it, it looked like Murley injured his shoulder while they wrestled. Eager was about to throw when Murley went down.
Forsberg, Crosby and Gagne were the three stars.
The win moves the Flyers into first place in the Atlantic Division a point ahead of the Rangers with two games in hand.
This was the last game before Christmas for the Flyers. The next game will be on Dec 26 in Florida.

ESPN Week 11
December 23, 2005
The Flyers were happy to get a point after a shootout loss to the Sabres on Monday night. Hey, give Philly credit for showing its depth and toughness with Simon Gagne and Robert Esche out of the lineup.
Holding at 11.
Sure, the Flyers are showing their depth and toughness with Gagne out, but what about the captain, former captain and the Finn? Those players’ being out is huge. And give the Finn in goal some credit, he IS the future.
Flyers in Pittsburgh Dec 23
December 23, 2005
Tonight the Flyers head to Pittsburg to play the Penguins.
The Flyers are coming off a 4-3 win last night against the Senators. The Penquins are coming off a 5 day rest and 3-4 loss last Saturday against the Sabres. Five days rest vs 20 hours? That is a messed up schedule people could complain about.
The Flyers won the last meeting between the two teams 6-3 in Pittsburgh. This season the Flyers have won 2 against Pittsburgh and lost 1 in overtime.
Injuries for the Flyers should be the same as last night Keith Primeau, Joni Pitkanen, Eric Desjardins, Ryan Ready, Turner Stevenson and Robert Esche
Injuries for the Penguins include Mario Lemieux and Dick Tarnstrom.
With the war of worlds between Forsberg and the kid last game, it should be interesting. I’m sure Hatcher will make his presence known again too.
This is the first game of an 11 game road trip for the Flyers, longest in team history.
Some Olympics notes….
Sami Kapanen is considering bowing out of the Olympics.
“Right now I'm leaning more toward staying home," Kapanen said after learning of his selection. "There are just so many games (at the Olympics). We play the first six games in eight nights. It's a tough schedule and it takes a lot out of your body."
Niittymaki might just make the Olympics after all. Miikka Kiprusoff will not be playing for Finland in the Olympics to rest his hip.
Branko Radivojevic made the ‘Taxi Squad’ for Slovakia, which means he gets to go the Olympics, but wont play unless someone pulls out.
Flyers over Senators 4-3
December 23, 2005
The Flyers dominated early and was able to hold on to a 4-3 win over the Senators last night in Philly.
Mike Knuble (power play), Sami Kapanen, R.J. Umberger and Simon Gagne (power play) each scored for the Flyers. Gagne’s return after missing five games was successful with a goal and an assist. This as the first game since November 25 that Gagne and Forsberg have played together.
Besides Donald Brashear (who actually played well) every other Flyer was in double digits for ice time minutes, which is important with a game tonight in Pittsburgh.
For the first half of the game the Flyers played very good. They showed a lot of hustle, winning the battles along the boards and getting some lucky breaks. Flyers were up 4-0 halfway thru the game. Then they started to sit back on the lead. The Senators scored 2 goals in the second and one in the third. In the end the Flyers were able to hold on for the win.
We needed to win these games if we’re going to improve. We did a lot of things well today. There were things in the third period that in a month or three weeks from now we’re going to get better at. We’re still learning to do some things in closing down hockey games and winning them, but we still need to win these games to prove to ourselves that we’re trying to be a top dog here and I thought for the first forty-five or fifty minutes we played a great hockey game. They have a really good team and they come at you hard. They don’t like to lose. - Ken Hithcock
Antero Niittymaki played a strong game with only one of the goals he allowed I would consider soft. He made great saves against Peter Schaefer and Bryan Smolinkski.
Freddy Meyer got his first NHL point with an assist on Umbergers goal.
Kapanen, Schaffer and Niittymaki were the three stars.
Knuble extended his goal-scoreing streak to four games
The Flyers are 2-0 against the Senators this season. Flyers coach Ken Hitchcock coached his 700 game.
Groin injuries are preventable
December 23, 2005
Is that so, someone should tell the Flyers.
Groin injuries are preventable
A quick summary of the article on what causes groin injuries.
The ice is bad.
More penalties more down time.
The pregame warm-up.

Not skating during the summer
The guy makes some good points.
Flyers visit childrens hospital
December 22, 2005
Carter, Handzus and Radivojevic smile for a group picture.
Yesterday more than half of the Philadelphia Flyer’s roster was at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia to visit with some of the kids who are in the hospital over the holidays.
"They don't know who I am, but if I can make them smile or laugh, it's worthwhile. They come and root for us 41 days a year. It's our way of giving back." Said Jon Sim
"In an ideal world, I wish every athlete had a charity that he was responsible for. I wish the players could do this on a weekly basis, not once in a while. We ought to find a way to make it more regular. I think it would help the community even more.'' Said Ken Hitchcock
Indeed.
If you wish to donate to The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia go to their website http://www.chop.edu and click on the ‘Ways of Giving’ link at the top. You can give online or download the form, print it out and mail it in.
With this being the Christmas season I would encourage everyone to give a little money, time or blood to whichever organization you feel needs it the most.
Senators in Philly Dec22
December 22, 2005
The Conference leading Ottawa Senators come in to Philadelphia tonight to play the Flyers. The Flyers won the first meeting between the two 5-3 on October 30. This is the second of four meetings between the teams this regular season.
The Flyers are coming off a 1-2 shootout loss to Buffalo on Monday. The Senators are coming off a 4-3 shootout loss to Montreal on Tuesday.
Injuries for the Flyers include Keith Primeau, Joni Pitkanen, Eric Desjardins, Ryan Ready, Turner Stevenson and Robert Esche. Probable or questionable for the game include Mike Richards, Simon Gagne and Sami Kapanen.
Injuries for the Senators include Chris Phillips, Jason Spezza, Brandon Bockenski and Martin Havlat.
Niittymaki will get his third straight start in goal.
Lines for tonights game should be Forsberg-Gagne-Knuble, Richards-Sim-Brashear, Handzus-Radivojevic-Savage, Carter-Umberger-Eager. If Kapenen does play, either Sim or Eager will sit out.
Some more Olympic notes…..
Peter Forsberg and Kim Johnsson will be playing for Sweden. Joni Pitkanen and Sami Kapanen will play for Finland. Michal Handzus will play for Slovakia.
I along with some other people am surprised that Antero Niittymaki did not get selected for Finland.
Gagne for Canada - Seidenberg for Germany
December 21, 2005
Simon Gagne will be heading to the Olympics for Canada.
“I was there in 2002 when we got the gold and that is, I think, the biggest highlight in my career.†That was fun, and I’m looking forward to trying to do the same thing again this year. I like the team we have with some new faces and some veterans again.
If you look in the past, a lot of good players get better and better because of those tournaments. That’s why I want to go there; first to represent my country and win the gold medal, but on the other side try to become a better player and learn from the best, and absorb more and more to be the best player I can for the Flyers.â€Â
Dennis Seidenberg has been selected to play for Germany in the Olympics.
So that makes five Flyers so far in the Olympics.
Seven other Flyers have the potential to play for their own countries.
Johnsson, Radivojevic, Forsberg, Handzus, Niittymaki, Pitkanen and Kapanen
