Orange Jersey Petition

Clarkie16 over at OrangeandBlack.net has started a petition found here to bring back the old orange jerseys. I personally agree with Clarkie16. I don't like the shade of orange used in the new version, makes names and numbers harder to read. I am also not a big fan of screwing with the logo and the 'sharp' shoulders.

Keith Primeau not going to Finland for training

A couple weeks ago Keith Primeau started getting post concussion symptoms again. He was expected to go to Finland for training before the start of training camp. Apparently that is not going to happen now. I suspect we are just getting closer to the ‘announcement’. I expect it within a month. Below is a Q&A session with Primeau.

"At the conclusion of our season and with the progress I had made at the end of the year heading into the summer, and after discussions with Ken Hitchcock, we felt it was best that I went to Europe at some point during the summer to do some conditioning having missed all of last year and the year before. So, I made arrangements to go over and practice with Sami [Kapanen’s] Division One team in Finland. Earlier in the summer, that was my plan."

Q: Did you ever intend to play with them, or just practice?

"Just practice. It was going to be four weeks of just practice in an attempt to get my skating legs underneath me and to venture into some contact."

Q: Last week you were examined by [Flyers team physician] Dr. Gary Dorshimer. Did that examination influence your decision in any way?

"I had made my decision not to go to Finland before visiting with Dr. Dorshimer. I just felt that the day was fast approaching and that I wasn’t at a point where I was ready to head over there in the middle of August. After visiting with Dr. Dorshimer last week, all he did was re-confirm my decision."

Q: How can you describe your feelings heading into the season?

"It’s cautious. I don’t like to use the word concerned, but I’m nervous. I have some residual pressure in my head and I continue to feel as though I get better, and I believe I’m on the last stretch of my concussion symptoms, but I just don’t know when the remainder of my symptoms are going to disappear. I’m still under no timeframe, but from a return standpoint I do feel the pressure to make a decision in order for the team to be able to move forward."

Q: What is the decision you have to make?

"Basically, what happens now? I am going to make one more attempt to get myself prepared to play this season, but I also understand that I’m running out of time for opportunities or chances to get myself ready to play. Not from a physical standpoint, but from a health standpoint. I won’t make any decisions one way or the other until I give myself that one more opportunity."

   

Flyers Sign Geoff Sanderson

The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have signed 6'0"’, 190-pound unrestricted free agent left wing Geoff Sanderson to a two-year contract, according to club General Manager Bob Clarke. Per club policy, financial terms were not disclosed.

"Geoff is an exceptionally gifted skater and goal scorer," said Clarke in making the announcement. "We have obviously increased our goal scoring and increased the speed of our club. It was the intent in the off-season to do that, and Geoff will help us improve in that area."

"I’m really excited to be joining the Flyers. It’s great to be on an elite team in the NHL that has high expectations to win the Stanley Cup," said Sanderson. "You look at the lineup they have and I am really excited to be part of it. I would best describe myself as a speed-type forward. I try to generate turnovers on the forecheck and just try to use my speed, which is probably my best asset." [.continue.]

What another center?! Ok he always plays the wing.
As if the Flyers did not have enough forwards going into the season, heck lets add one more. Does this give any hints of other Flyers not coming back?
Primeau, Kapanen or even Gagne?

The Flyers have not come to terms with Simon Gagne yet, although Clarke stated several weeks ago the deal would get done by last week. The rumors are really starting to get interesting with Gagne.

   

Brashear signs with Capitals

The Washington Capitals have signed free agent left wing Donald Brashear, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today.

Brashear, 34, appeared in 270 games for the Philadelphia Flyers during the past four seasons, posting 66 points (22 goals, 44 assists) and 648 penalty minutes. He has led the Flyers in penalty minutes in each of the past three seasons (2002-03 through 2005-06). In 2002-03 Brashear was named the winner of the Flyers’ Pelle Lindbergh Memorial Trophy as the team’s most improved player in a vote of his teammates. [.continue.]

I do have to say I kind of miss not having Brashear on the team and many other Flyers fans feel the same. We enjoyed his physical play and the energy that he brought to the ice. However the negatives were there. First one being the salary cap. His salary was way out of proportion to what his contributions were. Second he was a marked man. Being the heavy weight he was he drew penalties, badly. He had a slashing called on him a couple years ago when he was at closest 15 feet away from the guy. Third being the ‘New’ NHL with the BS instigator penalty under 5 minutes remaining in the game.
Also last year because of his shoulder injury he was not able to fight in the second half of the season which really cut into his game.

At any rate I am glad he found work. It will be interesting to see him play the Flyers.
September 26 in Philly and the 29th in DC are the first two games. If he fights, who will he go with? Richards last year wasn’t afraid to drop the gloves and go.

One thing I haven’t thought about this year yet is who will be the Flyers enforcer?
I think if anyone should step up it should be Hatcher. He is a big guy and for what the Flyers are paying him it should be added to one of his duties.

   

Joni Pitkanen signs a 1 year deal.

The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have re-signed 6'3", 215-pound defenseman Joni Pitkanen to a new one-year contract, according to club General Manager Bob Clarke. Per club policy, financial terms were not disclosed.

"Joni Pitkanen is a player who made great strides in his development last season and we feel can one day be one of the top defensemen in the league,” said Clarke in making the announcement. "His importance to the team is along the same lines as Jeff Carter, Mike Richards and R.J. Umberger and it is a priority for us to make sure that our younger players remain in the organization."[.continue.]

I am glad to see the signing. I am a little surprised at the one year deal, but I am guessing it had something to do with the injury last year. Pitkanen was the best defenseman offensively last season until he got injured. He did not have the same impact when he came back in the second half.
If he does well this season I can see him signing a long term deal next year.

Now if we could just get Gagne signed. Clarke did say he would be signed this week. The clock is ticking.

Forsberg back at the start of season

Peter Forsberg apparently will not be having surgery on his other ankle and will be back in November if not earlier for the start of the season.

Peter Forsberg – It's been a hard couple of weeks now. Not to do the second (surgery) is great. Knowing that I might be back for the beginning of the season is great, too.
Knowing that you're going to miss half the year is hard. It feels great that I'll be part of the team right at the beginning of the year.

Bob Clarke - After the doctor's visit today, we were told that his left foot is only 10 percent of what his right foot was and that his right foot is a month ahead of schedule. We expect he will be able to start skating in September.

I just hope he does not rush the rehab. I would rather have a fully healthy Forsberg going into the playoffs than Forsberg the entire season in and out of the lineup with injuries.

   

Keith Primeau head case

Keith Primeau who missed most of last season with post concussion symptoms is having them again. Primeau suffered a concussion on October 25 last season when Montreal Canadiens Alexander Perezhogin delivered an elbow to Primeau’s head. He only played 9 games last season.

After suffering all season with post concussion symptoms Primeau underwent nasal surgery on May 17 and experienced immediate relief. On July 1 the symptoms returned.

Primeau, who will turn 35 in November, has scheduled a meeting with team doctor Gary Dorshimer in hopes of discovering why his concussion symptoms disappeared for two weeks following nasal surgery, only to return.
"It's like peeling away layers of onion," said Primeau, who missed all but nine games last season with concussion symptoms. "You get through one obstacle and the next obstacle pops up. I'm trying to get to the bottom of it and it's frustrating."

The fact that Primeau is not overly enthused about the start of camp in early September is a tell-tale sign he is not as far along in his recovery as he had hoped at the start of the summer.
"I'm indifferent," he said. "I wish I could say I'm getting excited about the start of camp. I just don't have that feeling yet. It'll be well into August before I know."

By the looks of this Keith Primeau might very well be retiring soon.

   

Forsberg begins rehab

Peter Forsberg has begun rehab on his right ankle. He had surgery on May 15 to basically straighten his crooked foot out. Back in May rehab was projected to take 4 to 6 weeks which would take him to beginning to mid August. When he can walk again on his right foot he will go and have surgery on his left foot since that is crooked too.

A couple quotes from Forsberg.

Q: How are you doing?
PF: "Everything feels good. Everything is going as planned and it’s good to be back working out a little bit here with Jimmy (McCrossin). It’s been great. Everything has been positive but it’s hard to say if it’s going any quicker than we thought. It is just the beginning of rehab. But everything went well with the surgery and it’s great to be back working out. I got back a couple of days ago and just doing some things with the foot, everything I am supposed to do and not doing anything more after having a couple of weeks vacation."

Q: Is there any discomfort in your foot?
PF: "Well, the discomfort comes with the territory. There are a lot of things that were done to the foot and it is going to take awhile to heal up. But we are going down to the doctor on Tuesday to see how everything is going. He looked at the X-rays and everything looks good, nothing negative. I think we are at the stage where we are supposed to be, so we will see how it goes."

   

Umberger decides arbitration not good after all.

The Philadelphia Flyers announced that they have re-signed 6’2”, 200-pound center R.J. Umberger to a new two-year contract, according to club General Manager Bob Clarke. Per club policy, financial terms were not disclosed.

“We think that R.J. Umberger proved that he is a good, solid National Hockey League player with tremendous upside and he is only going to get better,” said Clarke in making the announcement. “Last year, he was really good for us. He is one of the future building blocks of our organization. There is nothing not to like about the way that R.J. plays the game and experience will make him better. He plays hard. He plays with determination. He has good skills and speed. He is just a good, complete hockey player." [.continue.]

Seems like Umberger wants to be around for awhile, eh?
