UNIONDALE, N.Y. _ Dare I say it? These days, it takes a bit of courage to say something brash like this: the Flyers appear to have turned the corner. Yeah, I know, every time we think or say this aloud, reality smacks the Flyers back down to earth. But this three-game road trip to Tampa Bay, Carolina and tonight in Uniondale where the Flerys won 2-1, has me convinced that the worst is o

The Philadelphia Flyers overcame a lot of adversity today before they even took the ice against the New York Islanders. Due to bad weather conditions the Flyers didn’t arrive to New York from Carolina until 3:30 a.m. this morning. The hockey game was set for 5 p.m just 13 and a half hours later. With little rest and a lot to play for the Flyers came out and played arguably their best game under coach Peter Laviolette. Philadelphia beat the Islanders this afternoon 2-1 to notch their third straight win. Goaltender Michael Leighton shined in his third consecutive start stopped 28 shots en route to his third straight win. Something Leighton has never accomplished in his career.

UNIONDALE, N.Y. - After tonight's 2-1 victory over the New York Islanders, Flyers center Jeff Carter repeated the constant message from Peter Laviolette during the Flyers' monthlong slide. This time, Carter could smile about the coach's saying.

Caution was sprinkled in among the happiness in the suddenly jubilant Philadelphia Flyers dressing room. A long-awaited three-game winning streak will do that for a team, even one mentioned as a Stanley Cup contender during the preseason. Jeff Carter snapped a tie in the second period and the Flyers beat the New York Islanders for the 13th straight time, 2-1 on Sunday night.

If Chris Pronger finds himself on the ice Jan. 1 at the 2010 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic at Boston's Fenway Park, snow falling around him, with a bloody nose and a couple of goals to his credit, well, it's just going to feel like old times agai...

Danny Briere, Kimmo Timonen and Scott Hartnell react to the 2-1 win at the Islanders on Dec. 27, 2009.
The question I hope to find the answer to in an hour or so is not "why was Jon Tavares skating around with no pants on a couple years ago" but rather "is Mike Richards really becoming the captain of the Flyers?" With two integeral goals before Christmas against the Lightning and then a goal and a shootout winner against Carolina last night Richards has looked like what a captain should look like, and been a significant reason why the Flyers are now 4 points ahead of where they were a week ago. s If all goes well tonight across the league a win could see us leapfrog the Isles and Lightning and land only 3 points out of the 8th place spot in the Eastern Conference. We'd be on a 3 game winning streak and the doom and gloom scenarios that have been painted for the past month may all fade to the archives of the Inquirer and Daily News. s I, as well has the hundreds of Flyers fans I just had to fight my way through in Penn Station, hope that this is the case. The Flyers smoke the Isles in regulation and Boston does the same to the Panthers, and suddenly we're right back in the playoff mix. s And one of the reasons I really believe it can happen is that since Santa was extra nice to me this year I'll once again be wearing my Lucky Lappy hoodie, which as of yet is undefeated:  WJC Update The shithead Candians beat Latvia 16-0 yesterday while the Americans came back from a 2-0 deficit to beat Slovakia, who knocked them out of medal contention last year, 7-3. The US takes on Luca Sbisa and Team Switzerland at the same time the Birds take on Brian Dawkins this afternoon. Watch which ever ass whooping you like, because both will be massacres.
