Olympic Break

So lets take stock of where we are at during the Olympic Break. First off, the Olympic games should be very entertaining to watch and root on the Americans. Now for the Flyers. Currently we sit in 6th place. Not quite where we wanted to be but not as bad as it was back in December. We have a new coach and have been playing consistent hockey for the most part

Kimmo's Last Hurrah

In an hour Kimmo Timonen begins play in his 4th Olympics. That is some sexy stuff right there. Here's a quick break down of his and Finland's performance in the previous 3: 1998 - The first Olympics (Nagano) with NHL players Kimmo was only 22 and played in all 6 of Finland's games on his way to a Bronze medal in a tournament in which neither Canada nor the US medaled after going in as heavy favorites. He earned an assist in his first games. 2002 - In Utah the Fins had a rough draw in the first elimination round game as they went head-to-head with the eventual Gold Medal champs, Canada, and lost 2-1.

Last week was about as perfect a week for Flyers hockey as could be expected (or not expected) out of this season. Two home-and-homes: four wins over a longtime divisional rival and a crucial conference opponent = 8 points = Flyers sitting in a decent spot going into the Olympic break.Like most of you, I’m sure, I did nothing but get down on the Flyers after they got down 2-0 to the Devils that

Olympic Update: 2/17/10

In the hours leading up to last night's Canada-Norway game, it was mistakenly reported that Flyers captain Mike Richards would be a healthy scratch. He didn't get much ice time (10:11) but he made an impact on the game, especially when he scored the goal that made it 3-0 just after Canada killed off a 5-on-3 disadvantage midway through regulation. Chris Pronger didn't see too much action in h

Hey Guys,  Thanks to all the readers for following my blog, and more importantly the USA mens olympic team. It has been a whirlwind few days in getting ready to start the tournament but as I write this we are currently 1-0 after a humbling first game against a great Switzerland team.  We started with our first practice monday night, in which we found out who we were playing alongside, and the systems we would use. It was tough to take it all in, but going to bed last night I think I can speak for everyone when I say we were confident.  The first period was tough, we managed to come out leading by one after I collected a lucky bounce in and put it in. It calmed me down quite a bit, and I think it helped everyone find a comfort level.

The Flyers Olympic Gold Curse

The Flyers came out of the 2004-05 lockout with a bang and were the best team in the NHL by January of 2006. But then they sent 6 players, including two goalies, to Torino to compete in a little tournament known as the Olympics that February. We all know how that season ended - getting smacked around 7-1 by the Sabres in the last game of the playoffs. After Gags, Nitty, Hatch, Knubs, and Bobby Esche wasted two weeks in Italy and Peter Forsberg won a gold medal the Flyers stumbled into the playoffs, going 11-10-2 over the last 23 games of the season. Because of their great start the Flyers were able to finish in a tie for first place in the Atlantic Division, but lost the tie-breaker to the Devils and ended up earning the 5th seed in the Eastern Conference. New Jersey made sure of that by beating the Flyers 5-1 in the 81st game of the season. And we all know what followed that - the 2006-07 season

Flyers Olympian mini-update

This is no big surprise: Kimmo Timonen is slated to start on Finland's top defensive pairing tomorrow, alongside Vancouver's Sami Salo. Former Flyers Joni Pitkänen and Lasse Kukkonen will be the second pairing. Pitkänen and Kukkonen have known each other since childhood and were teammates throughout their early careers with Kärpät Oulu, as well as defensive partners with the Flyers during the
