Getty Images First, it was Simon Gagne. Then, it was Jeff Carter. Yesterday, add Ian Laperriere to that lengthy injury list for the Philadelphia Flyers. The Flyers were informed yesterday by doctors that Laperriere had suffered a mild concussion and a brain contusion to go along with his already broken orbital bone as a result of blocking a shot in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals against New Jersey. The 36 year-old forward will miss the rest of the playoffs but was told he will make a full recovery for next season. Although, Laperriere said it would take a ‘little miracle’ for him to return if the Flyers make the cup, but realistically, he will happily stand aside and play cheerleader. “They don’t want any bleeding in [my brain]

Meltzer's Musings: 4-28-10

There's no two ways about it: The loss of Ian Laperriere for the remainder of the playoffs hurts every bit as much as the losses of Jeff Carter and Simon Gagne. Over the course of the season, even when the club was struggling for wins, you could count on Ian Laperriere to play the game the right way. The team is going to miss his forechecking presence, physical play, toughness and two-way grit.

The Games We Play

So the question of the yesterday is 'who do you want, Boston or Washington?' And while it would seem that you're having fun answering this question I assure you that you are not. I lieu of the nothing that we had to discuss until we found out Lappy's brain got dented it was surely something to talk about, but not fun. And here's why: 1. You can't even decide. You say one team and think you really mean it but then picture Milan Lucic and think that the Flyers might have a better chance with the other - either way. Then you secretly arrive at the conclusion that you really don't know because anything can happen in any series. Bolstered by the fact that you don't want the Flyers to 'sneak' into the playoffs through the bottom half of the Conference while the best teams in the West face off. 2.

Holmgren transcript on Laperriere injury

Below is a transcript of the conference call with Flyers General Manager Paul Holmgren regarding an injury update of Flyers forward Ian Laperriere on Apr. 27, 2010 Q: Paul, any update on Ian Laperriere? “After seeing a couple different doctors both in Philadelphia yesterday and a specialist in Pittsburgh today, we’ve come to the understanding that Ian has a contusion of the brain, mild concussion and right now we’re going to list him as being out indefinitely.” Q: Did the doctor say it’s dangerous to play the rest of the year? “I think this is significant. They saw a little spot there initially and I think they were hoping, like we all were, that it would dissipate a little bit, but after seeing the doctor yesterday and validating it again today – it kind of erased any optimism we had. Right now it’s not safe for Ian to play.” Q: Paul is his vision still blurry today as you indicated yesterday?

Laperriere to miss remainder of playoffs

Ian Laperriere learned on Tuesday the price he'll pay for blocking a shot with his face in Game 5 of the Flyers' series-clinching win over the Devils last week. According to Flyers GM Paul Holmgren Laperriere will miss the remainder of the playoffs with a concussion after a CT Scan showed a spot in the area where the puck made contact above his right eye. Laperriere has been diagnosed with a concussion and has been advised rest for a minimum of four weeks. Holmgren said he was not optimistic Laperriere could return at any point during the playoffs. The Flyers are scary. So scary, in fact, that the Capitals are scared witless of closing out their series. Despite Ovechkin getting a picture with Hartnell above, he really hates the ideal of facing the Orange and Black in the second round. Ovie's top five reasons for not wanting to see the Flyers: 5. Even though the Flyers have lost two starting tenders, they still have better netminding than the Varlamov-Theodore tandem. 4
