Leighton Re-signed; What’s Going to Happen at Midnight?!

Photo:

Today Michael Leighton was re-signed on the eve of NHL free agency. He received a two-year deal, totaling $3.1 million dollars. His cap hit will minimal, but it’s definitely a raise over his abysmal salary last year. Many Flyers fans are shaking their heads in disgust, yet some are happy with the news. That being

UFA D-Men on the Bristol Stool Scale

Photo:

Earlier today Le Pere de Puck had a post up in which he chronicled the 10 UFA defensemen that he thinks your team should actually be going after tomorrow when the 2010 Free Agent Bonanza opens. My opinion on the matter can be seen above, scaled against the type of dump I will take upon hearing the news that we signed any of these chochskis. I'll be pleasantly surprised with a Type 4, but otherwise I want nothing to do with these clowns. I'm sticking to my guns from earlier this post-season and urging Homer to go after Kurtis Foster - $4.5M over 3 years.   The Hamhuis Type 7 might be as much result of excitement as frustration, but it's such an impossibility that I don't think I'll have to face that giant squirt. I can't believe that dick wouldn't sign with us, but at least it appears that Homer may have fleeced the Penguins in the process

Flyers sign Leighton to two-year deal

The Flyers and goaltender Michael Leighton have agreed on a two-year, $3.1 million contract, the Courier-Post has learned. The contract for the 29-year-old goalie will carry a $1.55 million salary cap hit, allowing the Flyers to pursue a quality free agent defenseman such as Anton Volchenkov or Dan Hamhuis. Read more about today's contract and the Flyers' plans for free agency in Thursday's Courier-Post.

Free Agent D-Men

Yesterday, I covered free agent goalies , because I think that’s our most glaring need. Adding another defenseman (or two) to the mix would be a huge help as well. Of course team defense relies more on the entire 5-man unit that’s on the ice, but when you have individuals that create a liability, that’s a problem. During the regular season, the Flyers’ bottom pair of defensemen were fine. But once the playoffs rolled around, those guys couldn’t be trusted enough. So, who do we replace them with? A little help for the goalie maybe? Here’s the list of the top guys, followed by who I’d be ok with: Sergei Gonchar Dan Hamhuis Paul Martin Anton Volchenkov Pavel Kubina Willie Mitchell Henrik Tallinder Aaron Ward Brett Lebda Derek Morris Jordan Leopold Mark Eaton Kim Johnsson I’ll take any of the top 4 guys on that list, in addition to Morris, Leopold, and Johnsson

Flyers Prospect Camp: Another Example of My Awesome

Photo:

It's been a little over a year since I wasted a whole lot of effort trying to predict who the Flyers might pick with the 2009 1st Round draft pick that was eventually included in the Chris Pronger deal. After weeks of analyzing the Central Scouting Bureau's rankings and previous NHL drafts I came to the conclusion that no amount of scouting would help a general manager anymore than a $40 a month Metro PCS phone with unlimited internet could. In fact, the conclusion to my weeks of research was a post called 'A Scout's Work: Draft Guesses .'   But when the Flyers traded their pick my draft fun/analysis was over. Or so I thought until today when I looked at the roster for the Flyers 2010 Prospect Camp and immediately recognized a familiar name in Justin Dowling .   I picked Dowling as a post-first round sleeper that the Flyers should keep their eye on and possibly gobble up if the opportunity presented itself late in the draft. He had increased his point total from 28 to 66 in a single season and... I liked the sound of his last name - good enough for me. But instead, as the Flyers last pick approached and Dowling remained available the Flyers went with a 6'10 freak from Denmark, who I swear, if he ever scores a point for the Flyers I'll buy you all a Burger King Breakfast Bowl.

Free Agency Aproaching

Photo:

Oh man, two more days and the market bell will ring. The landscape has changed ever since the NHL instituted the salary cap. You could never accuse the Flyers of being cheap; they always threw dollars at top free agents. Unfortunately, those days are gone forever. So while Ilya Kovalchuk is the top name, there’s no chance he’ll be wearing orange and black any time soon. Of course, offense isn’t the biggest issue for the Flyers . Instead, for the 100th time in the last 20 years, we’re looking for a goalie. Be vewy, vewy quiet

Prospects Fight

Here's our 4th Round pick Tye McGinn wearing the Phantoms old colors in a fight from over a year ago: And our last pick of the draft, Brendan Bill Ranford, who apparently likes to play on the EDGE: If either of these two ever registers a point for the Flyers I'll buy you all a McRibb. ps - when you search for the guy we got for Jonathan Matsumoto, Richard Blidstrand, all the results that come back are for Richard Marx. Which can lead you into weird alleys of Youtube if you're not careful.
