Flyers trade Hamhuis to Pittsburgh

By CHUCK GORMLEY Courier-Post Staff Less than a week after the Flyers acquired the rights to defenseman Dan Hamhuis, they traded him to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a third-round pick in the 2011 NHL draft. The move came late Friday night after contract talks between Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren and Hamhuis’ agent, Wade Arnott, broke off. “We spent a lot of time and had a lot of conversations with Dan and his agent and we just couldn’t agree,” Holmgren said. “I think he would have been a good fit on our team. It didn’t go as we had planned, but who knows? We’ll see what happens.” Hamhuis was reportedly seeking a three-year deal worth more than $4.5 million a season and was concerned over playing time in Philadelphia, where he was slotted as a fourth defenseman behind Chris Pronger, Matt Carle and Kimmo Timonen. Apparently, the Penguins feel they are better suited to meet Hamhuis’ contract demands. Since the Flyers surrendered defenseman Ryan Parent in the original trade for Hamhuis’ rights, they essentially get a third-round pick for Parent

Holmgren, Liut Meet on Leighton

Paul Holmgren said he would meet with Michael Leighton's agent this week in LA. He did this morning in downtown at the JW Marriott. The two sat within shouting distance of myself in what is one of the largest, most crowded lobbies I have ever seen. It's like walking into a mall at the JW; it's that big. Liut told me there is "sincere" interest on the Flyers part in re-signing his client. H

Meltzer's Musings: 6-24-10

There are few NHL stars who simply hit the ground running upon their arrival in the league and emerged steadily as dominant players in the world's top league. Most players go through ups and downs in their early seasons and then reach a jump-off point from which their careers take off. In the case of Claude Giroux, we will start to find out next season if his outstanding run during the Stanle

What to watch for: 2010-2011 Flyers schedule released

Photo:

Photo/Getty The NHL’s Eastern Conference Champions will begin their re-launched efforts to return to the Stanley Cup Finals beginning on October 7th in Pittsburgh’s brand new arena,  the Consol Energy Center. With many teams now gunning to bring the Flyers down after reaching the Stanley Cup, the challenge will become even tougher. Below are my top-5 matchups to look forward to now that the complete 2010-2011 Flyers schedule has been released. Game 1: Season opener Thursday Oct. 7 @ Pittsburgh Penguins Who better to open up the new era of Penguins hockey in their freshly built Consol Energy Center arena than those cross-state rival Philadelphia Flyers. Hands down one of the best rivalries in the National Hockey League, they will no doubt battle for the top spot of the Atlantic Division. This game will be a must-see game as usual, especially when both teams could look very different

Live Chat for NHL Awards

Photo:

Gotta catch 'em all! The annual NHL Awards Ceremony is on tonight, and we’ll be having a live chat on our main NHL site, Too Many Men on the Site . Here are the nominees, and my predicted winners: Hart Trophy -- MVP Sidney Crosby Alex Ovechkin Henrik Sedin Prediction: They all had similar numbers, so you pretty much gotta look at who carried their team more. I give Ovechkin his 3rd in a row because the Washington Capitals ran away with the President’s Trophy, and he’s the unquestionable leader of the team. The Ted Lindsay award is for the MVP as voted by the players. It has the same candidates this year as the Hart, and I’ll go with the same winner. (Note: the award was knows as the Lester Pearson Award prior to this season) Norris Trophy -- Best defenseman Duncan Keith Drew Doughty Mike Green Prediction: The playoffs have no impact on this award, so I think Mike Green walks away with this one. Doughty might be more deserving because he’s a better defensive player, but I think East Coast bias, along with a lot better offensive numbers, helps Green . Vezina Trophy -- Best Goalie Martin Brodeur Ilya Bryzgalov Ryan Miller Prediction: Voters might be swayed by Miller’s Olympic performance, but I’ll go out on a limb and pick Bryzgalov for this one

Fansided’s Mock Draft

Photo:

The Entry Draft is approaching this weekend in Los Angeles . Of course,  as a fan, it’s fun to play armchair GM. However, the Flyers’ 1st round pick was part of the package that we sent away to get Chris Pronger . Thus, I didn’t participate in this mock. However, the rest of the bloggers did, and here are their selections and explanations: Pick Team Player Selected Player’s Position Player’s Junior Team Analysis 1. Taylor Hall Left Wing Windsor Spitfires (OHL) Forget the raging debate over whether Hall or Tyler Seguin, the prototypical playmaking centre from the OHL’s Plymouth Whalers, is the better No.

On Eric Lindros and The Hall of Fame

Photo:

If you developed some sort of gum that enabled you to time travel when you chewed it and went back to 1995, you wouldn't have found a bigger Eric Lindros fan than me. Granted, your time may have been better spent doing something other than looking for the world's biggest Eric Lindros fan, like hunting dinosaurs or convincing 15-year-younger-you that you really actually should study harder, but nonetheless, if you stumbled upon me I could have reenacted the Matthew Barnaby leg-sweep fight with stunning precision. We pretty much summed up those thoughts on the day Eric Lindros officially retired. Seriously, read that ^. And with the recent Hall of Fame inductions, and it being Eric's first year of eligibility, we figured we'd be fielding ones of questions from our comments section about whether or not we thought Eric should ever make it in. Luckily, when sorting through literally hundreds of comments we found just that question from a Robert Ganusche. Thanks Robert.

4 Days 'til The 2010 Draft!!

Photo:

You know who that guy on the right is? Come on…come on…think Flint Generals 2009. Think never made it to the NHL. Think never even made it to the AHL. Yes! Exactly! That's the Flyers 3rd round 62nd overall pick from the the 1997 draft, Kris Mallette! Good for you! _ _ _ _ _ _ Unless something shockingly big happens before Friday, it looks as if the Flyers are going to go without a first round pick in this year's entry draft. And I don't care. You know why?

Shero Overlooked Again By HHoF

There is a school of thought out there that the HBO documentary on the Broad Street Bullies might have hurt Fred Shero's chances of getting in the Hockey Hall of Fame this year. I don't buy it. Shero was up in the past and didn't make it. He was up again this year. I nominated him for 2010. Anyone - any person, not just hockey writers _ can nominate someone to the HHoF.
