Happy Fathers Day

I think it’s safe to say most guys have their father’s to thank for turning them into sports fans.  Before we could even put a sentence together, we were probably playing catch, kicking a soccer ball, and if you live where it’s cold enough, skating before we could walk. As we got older, and discovered the magical device called the TV, we also learned that the best thing on TV to watch was sports (and Baywatch). I grew playing soccer and street hockey, but when it came to watching the pro’s, it was pretty much only hockey. And while of course we cheered for the Flyers , we also rooted for Russian players around the league, because that’s where we came from. Bure , Mogilny , Federov , Kovalev , I loved to watch those guys. Lindros of course was (and is) my favorite hometown hero.  And being an elementary schooler in the mid-90’s, I had no idea where these arenas where, how the people in the crowd got there, or that it was even possible to go watch these players live. As my 10th birthday approached in November of ‘95, my dad came home with the big news. We had tickets to Mogilny , Bure , and the rest of the Canucks come to town to play the Flyers

The acquisition of Dan Hamhuis to the Flyers' defense corps gives the Flyers the best 1-to-5 group that I ever remember the team assembling. From what I understand, Hamhuis' addition will not affect the club's efforts to resign restricted free agent Braydon Coburn (who made $1.3 million last season), nor will the club actively shop Matt Carle (who has two seasons left at a $3.4 million cap hit).

Hamhuis Talks Open Monday

Well, the Preds obviously are dumping salary to make a larger move and re-signing Ryan Parent is going to be a lot easier as an RFA than re-signing Dan Hamhuis, who is now a Flyer. When NSH didn't re-up at the trade deadline you knew Hamhuis was a goner this summer. Wade Arnott, the agent for Hamhuis, says contract talks begin in earnest on MON. Groundwork was laid this morning, he said.

Flyers steal Hamhuis from Nashville for Parent

Dan Hamhuis The Philadelphia Flyers knew they needed defensive help. Well, they didn’t waste anytime suring that problem up. The Flyers have acquired the rights of the Nashville Predators’ top player, Dan Hamhuis. On Saturday afternoon, the club announced that they have sent defensemen Ryan Parent in exchange for Hamhuis and a conditional pick in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. “Our intention is to get him signed prior to [July 1], and that is what our aim is at this point in time,” said Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren. “The sooner that we get going on trying to get this done, the better.” Hamhuis is an instant upgrade to an already exceptional blue line.

Flyers acquire Hamhuis for Parent, pick

The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have acquired 6’1’’, 209-pound defenseman Dan Hamhuis (HAM-HOOS) and a conditional draft pick in the 2011 National Hockey League Entry Draft from the Nashville Predators in exchange for defenseman Ryan Parent, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren. "Dan Hamhuis is a good all-around defenseman,” said Holmgren. “He has been in Nashville since his draft year. He's a guy who can play lots of minutes and he can play in a lot of different situations, from power play to killing penalties. He is another athlete we'd like to add to our team to continue to improve our defense." "Obviously it is sad to leave the Predators.

This afternoon the Flyers reported that they acquired the rights to Nashville defenseman Dan Hamhuis. Hamhuis should not be a name that is new to you if you followed trade rumors at the trade deadline this season. He was one of the main players the Flyers were looking for along with Florida goalie Thomas Vokoun.

Stevens offered Kings assistant job

According to Helene Elliott of the Los Angeles Times, former Flyers head coach John Stevens, who was replaced by Peter Laviolette in December, is the Kings' choice to fill the assistant coaching vacancy created by Mark Hardy's resignation and has been offered the job, and his hiring could be announced next week, confirmed an NHL source, who was granted anonymity because the organization is not ready to make the decision public. Key Kings executives know Stevens well. Kings Coach Terry Murray, previously part of the Flyers' staff, worked with Stevens in Philadelphia, and Kings General Manager Dean Lombardi and assistant GM Ron Hextall are familiar with him from their past employment in the Flyers' organization.

Everyone is breathing a sigh of relief that Danny Briere and his 9-year-old son, Cameron, will be okay after being involved in a serious car accident along I-81 in New York at about 12:30 AM on Thursday morning. Briere was driving north through the night en route to visiting family and friends in Canada, when he became drowsy behind the wheel. According to reports, his 2010 Range Rover was pas
