Meltzer's Musings: 6-16-10

The other day on the Sports Final program, Howard Eskin reported that the Flyers are unhappy with James Van Riemsdyk and that he is a player who could be used as trade bait this summer. While I doubt that JVR will be moved at this stage of his career, Eskin's report is not the first indication that the organization is concerned about whether the second overall pick of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft is g

Will the Flyers Come Through?

So we're looking to make what stands to be a very unexciting draft for Flyers fans a little more exciting. Pictured above is a screen grab of a form I submitted to the Flyers PR staff earlier today. Here's what the comments section says: - - - - Hey! Flyers Goal Scored By ...( www.flyersgoalscoredby.com ) is looking to run a third round draft pick contest in which our readers will try to guess, given some guidance, who exactly the Flyers will pick with the 89th overall pick in 10 days time. Is there any swag that you're basically on the verge of throwing away that you could send to us that we could offer as prizes? Like a Mike Rathje or Nolan Baumgartner jersey (that was a silly signing btw). Or even a 20 min call with Derek Settlemyer

VILLE-A-PALOOZA Cancelled Again!

Photo:

Holy Winston Churchill.   I was going to write this whole funny thing about VILLE-A-PALOOZA being cancelled for the second year in a row but, not shit, it just took me 2 hours to make that stupid picture.   I was going to include ice castle jokes.   I was going to make fun of Antti Niemi for having a fat, clock face like Cogsworth.   I was going to do a lot of things. But being very new to photo editing is really cramping my style

eRichards Smokes Gomez, And It's Different Every Time

So today, as I'm sure you read elsewhere, EA Sports released the trailer for NHL '11, which doesn't look like it's going to disappoint. Although there are many cool new effects like breaking sticks and shaving Bill McCreary's mustache, one part of the trailer caught my eye - the 4 seconds where they decided to show Mike Richards repeatedly steam roll Scott Gomez: So for 4 seconds today the Flyers were back, and I was partially human again. Here's the full trailer if you want to punish yourself by looking at the present you can't have for 3 months. God damn this summer shit!

Stanley Cup Final

Well, I don't think I am over the Flyers loss yet. It is a difficult pill to swallow on the goal that was let in. Leighton actually played well enough to win this game but I guess it wasn't meant to be. In fact had Jeff Carter been playing with two good feet or perhaps at least one and he was able to lift the shot we would have been playing on Friday night for all of the marbles. However, Neimi was just good enough. I am very proud of this team but when you are this close it hurts that much more. Think back to the last two years. The Conference Final loss to the Penguins was harder to take than last years first round loss

TSN, Expressen: Flyers tried to lure Forsberg

According to TSN and the Swedish newspaper Expressen, the Flyers nearly had an unexpected boost prior to their lengthy playoff run as Peter Forsberg said he had been offered a contract to join the team on March 2nd. Forsberg told Expressen that Flyers' general manager Paul Holmgren approached him about joining the Flyers for the remainder of the regular season when both Jeff Carter and Simon Gagne were struggling with injuries. Forsberg stated that only his own injuries prevented him from joining Philly. "Yeah, it's true," Forsberg told Expressen. "But I felt that I wasn't in good enough shape to go." The 36-year old Forsberg has not played in the NHL since a nine-game stint with the Colorado Avalanche in the 2007-08 season. He has battled injury concerns throughout his illustrious career, and a recurring foot injury limited him to just 23 games this past year with MODO of the Swedish Elite League. He was healthy enough to skate for his country at the Olympics, however he was largely ineffective, managing a solitary assist in four games as Sweden bowed out early

No Summer Break

Photo:

So after a long, up-and-down season has ended, this time with a little more agony than usual, Summer is officially here. That usually means ice cream, bikini’s, no school for the kids, baseball , World Cup Soccer, and no hockey. Well, the players might have unlaced their skates for the summer, but I will still be here. We’ve got more reviews of the past season, the draft, free agency, possible trades, and eventually, previews for a new season. Here’s a sneak peek on what lies ahead: Unrestricted Free Agents (according to http://www.hockeybuzz.com/cap-central/ ): Arron Asham Mika Pyorala (remember him?) Lukas Kraijcek Michael Leighton Restricted Free Agents: Daniel Carcillo Darroll Powe Braydon Coburn Ryan Parent Danny Syvret NHL Entry Draft: The draft is June 25-26, in Los Angeles.  As of right now, we don’t have a pick in the first two rounds. The first round pick was part of the Pronger trade, the 2nd round pick was shipped away in another minor deal. So barring trades, there probably won’t be much to report on here

Meltzer's Musings: 6-13-10

Over the next week, I will be writing blogs related to the Flyers' offseason priorities and the outlook for the players on the roster that reached the Stanley Cup Final. The most obvious place to start is in in goal. With Brian Boucher signed for another season, I think the Flyers should thank Michael Leighton for everything he did after being picked up off waivers and then move on. If Bouch
