Questions surround Flyers’ 2010-11 roster

The Flyers now have 21 players under contract, with qualifying offers to restricted free agents Dan Carcillo and Darroll Powe still pending. Here is a look at the Flyers’ projected lineup heading into the 2010-11 season: FORWARD LINES LW Simon Gagne C Mike Richards RW Jeff Carter LW Scott Hartnell C Danny Briere RW Ville Leino LW James van Riemsdyk C Claude Giroux RW Dan Carcillo LW Jody Shelley C Blair Betts RW Ian Laperriere DEFENSE PAIRINGS LD Matt Carle RD Chris Pronger LD Braydon Coburn RD Kimmo Timonen LD Sean O’Donnell RD Andrej Meszaros GOALIES Michael Leighton Brian Boucher Extras: LW Darroll Powe, LW Riley Cote, D Oskars Bartulis Just got off the phone with Paul Holmgren and for the life of me I still can't figure out the Jody Shelley signing. Unless Ian Laperriere is planning on retiring I can't understand why the Flyers would want Carcillo, Shelley and Lappy in the same lineup every night when they desperately need a guy who can finish alongside Claude Giroux. And what about Jeff Carter? As much as I like him, he does not fit anywhere on this roster unless Giroux moves to top-line right wing and Carter drops to third-line center, which makes no sense. Maybe there is still another blockbuster in the works involving Carter.

Flyers sign Jody Shelley, Sean O’Donnell

The Flyers' free agent frenzy has continued today with the signings of veteran right wing Jody Shelley and veteran defenseman Sean O'Donnell. Shelley, 34, agreed to a three-year deal worth $3.3 million, while O'Donnell agreed to a one-year deal worth $1 million. Shelley is a 6-foot-3, 225-pound checking-line winger who will replace Arron Asham and could make Dan Carcillo expendable. O'Donnell, 38, is a stay-at-home defenseman willing to drop the gloves and will be a solid sixth defenseman on a unit that includes former Ducks teammate Chris Pronger, Matt Carle, Kimmo Timonen, Braydon Coburn and newly acquired Andrej Meszaros.

Flyers get Meszaros for 2nd round pick, Coburn signed

Photo:

The Philadelphia Flyers didn’t waste any time in grabbing another defensemen. At the spark of noon, GM Paul Holmgren traded away a 2nd-round pick to the Tampa Bay Lightning for defensemen Andrej Meszaros.  The 6-2 223-pounder who didn’t quite achieve his offensive potential in Tampa, comes to a Philly team who was in need of another big hitting d-man. Meszaros, 25, is a speedy big man who hits like a truck and can score when pushed to do so. UPDATE: The Flyers have resigned defensemen Braydon Coburn to a 2-year deal worth $6.4 million with an annual cap hit of $3.2 per. One of two things are left. 1.

Flyers trade for Meszaros, re-sign Coburn

The Flyers didn't wait until the free agency period began to land a defenseman. Just prior to today's noon start of free agency, Paul Holmgren acquired 24-year-old defenseman Andrej Meszaros from the Tampa Bay Lightning for a second-round pick in next year's draft. Meszaros had six goals and 11 assists in 81 games with the Lightning last season. He carries a cap hit of $4 million and is signed for four years.
