Flyers Gagne Exhiled to Tampa

What did Simon Gagne do to deserve this? After a decade of service, 259 goals, playoff heroics and countless other memories, his salary just became too much for the Flyers to deal with. Never a team that’s been known for their cap management, they were once again up against the wall after recent trades and signings. So they asked Simon to waive his no trade clause, and he complied. And of all the places they could have sent him, he goes to freaking Tampa Bay ?!?! He came back from injury and made an immediate impact in these past playoffs. OT goal in game 4 to cut the Bruins lead to 3-1, and then the game-winner in the 3rd period of Game 7 to complete the historic comeback. So we thank him for everything by shipping him to hockey wasteland

How I Remember Gagne

Couple years ago, speaking at Arcadia University, someone asked me how "jaded" I had become covering professional athletes for the past 35 years. I replied that was the reason why I chose to stay w/'hockey and not seek covering pro football or something else. I felt NHL players were less spoiled, less pampered, etc. and it allowed me to be less jaded. Most of you will rail against me for th

The Legend of Yzerman

You may have been wondering where I've been... heck, I've been wondering where I've been. There are a few things that could pull me out of my recent sabbatical from the interweb rant posting, and Homer managed to pick out one of the hat. How in God's good earth does the Flyers GM trade a perennial 30-goals scorer and a career Flyer for a #10 d-man and a throw-away pick??  Then this same joker has the nerve to hold a presser and say that this is a move to strengthen our defense?!? Have another, brother

Simon Gagne spent the first 10 years of his career in Philadelphia. Photo/Getty It has been known for weeks that Flyers left-winger Simon Gagne was on his way out of Philadelphia. The question remaining was, when? That answer came Monday afternoon when Gagne was dealt to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Gagne, 30, was sent South in return for defensemen Matt Walker and a 4th-round draft pick. “This was a move to solidify our defense,” said GM Paul Holmgren

Gagne era ends as winger dealt to Lightning

Flyers trade Gagne to Tampa for defenseman

The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have acquired 6’4’’, 215-pound defenseman Matt Walker and a fourth round selection in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for left wing Simon Gagne, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren. “This was a move to solidify our defense,” said Holmgren. “Matt Walker is a right shot defenseman that we like. He brings size, grit and toughness to our backend. Simon Gagne played 10 seasons for the Flyers and was not only a good player for us, but also handled himself in a first class manner on and off the ice.” Walker, 30, appeared in 66 games during the regular season for the Lightning, recording five points (2G,3A) and 90 penalty minutes. “My initial reaction was pure excitement,” said Walker. “To find out that I was coming to Philly, I don’t know if I would say it was a life-long dream, but I’ve always wanted to play in Philly and I thought I would be a good fit there.” Over parts of seven seasons in the NHL with the St. Louis Blues (2002-03 to 2007-08), Chicago Blackhawks (2008-09) and Lightning (2009-10), Walker has recorded 30 points (4G,26A) and 444 penalty minutes in 304 career regular season games, and two assists and 14 penalty minutes in 21 career Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Meltzer's Musings: 7-19-10

The latest Simon Gagne to LA rumor making the rounds today has the Flyers getting another soon-to-be unrestricted free agent in return: ex-Flyer Justin Williams, a two-time 30-goal scorer in the NHL. The oft-injured Williams, who suffered a broken leg last season and previously suffered a torn Achilles tendon and a pair of serious knee injuries, scored 10 goals and 29 points in 49 regular seas

Wonder if Zherdev Remembers This?

Mike Richards loves running dudes. One victimof his highlight reel hits is none other than his new linemate Vladimir 'Nik' Zherdev. Take a look if you don't remember, but keep in mind that this was also the year that Mike Richards refused to throw a punch: Maybe Richie needs some lessons from the new Flyer prospect that everyone has a hard-on for's brother, J.P. Testwuide: Not. Throwing punches with gloves on should be reserved for 8 year-olds at the doorstep of igloos.

While I'm being lazy…

...and posting Youtube clips instead of ranting or wondering what our GM is up to, I like these KHL highlights of Zherdev more than any NHL ones I've seen. The goal at the 2:10 mark is miraculous: He's got some dirty stick-handling skills. Should be interesting if nothing else. And it appears that Zherdev's petition with the League went through. #99 is back in commission. And after those clips why shouldn't it be
