Flyers 90’s Memories

Photo:

My first season watching hockey was 94-95, when the season was shortened by a lockout. I was in 4th grade, and picked the perfect time to get into the sport. This was the Flyers first season back in the playoffs after a 5 year slump, and they had the best player in the league, Eric Lindros . Today is Saturday, it’s the offseason, so I thought I’d just reminisce about my early days watching the coolest game on Earth. And I thought we woulda won... First off, I’m going based on memories only.

Flyers Dancing Guy

Every stadium/arena experience is different. The vendors sell local flavors, the sight lines are different, the music is tuned to whatever is popular, and crowds have their unique chants/songs. A few teams in the NHL have a mascot, while some fanbases have a fan that stands out, whom everybody knows. In Philadelphia , it’s the dancing guy. His name is Shawn Hill, he’s large, and he wears that bright orange sweater to every game; you cannot miss him. Often times he recycles old moves, sometimes he breaks out new moves, but at all times, he’s full of energy and entertainment.

Zherdev to Wear 10 with Flyers

Some of you are going to do it, and I'm not sure why.   But for those of you crazies who bought a Downie or Prospal (second time around) jersey, you can bet your bottom ball that Nik Zherdev will wear number 10 this season. You see, I got the info from inside sources that I don't have to name. A 'team official' or 'someone close to the organization.' What's it matter. Take it to the bank. I have about a 1 in 80 chance, so just go ahead and buy it.

Flyers’ Crowded Locker Room

So some of my recent posts have highlighted some of the new additions to the team. However, we haven’t had many subtractions. It doesn’t take a mathematician to realize we might have to many players on our roster. (Note: Right after my last post, Carcillo signed a new deal with the team.) No trades, no RFA’s signing elsewhere, prospects coming in: this all makes for some tough coaching decisions. So let’s go through the line-up and make some guesses. When did we sign Your Name? I’m going to using ESPN.com for the positions.

Flyers make a depth signing

The Flyers have made a depth signing with the addition of free agent veteran defenseman Dan Jancevski. He received a two-year, two-way contract that will pay him $525,000 at the NHL level and $250,000 to play in the AHL. The 29-year-old Jancevski is a former second-round pick of the Dallas Stars. The 6-foot-3, 212 pound blueliner has suited up in 9 NHL games for Dallas (two stints) and the Tam

Negotiation 101: I Wanna Play My Game Tonight

In 'The Art of Art Negotiation', co-written by famous art curator and Jew, Sal Iceberg, and myself, one of the main points we try to drive home is that the common theme among negotiations, regardless of whether we're taking about Monet or money, is that the longer something you're trying to sell sits around going unsold the more its value drops. And Flyers Paul Manager is doing a great job of giving you a real, live case study in this lesson:   And it's even worse in this case. Because not only does everyone know that we want to sell our product, they know that we've bought so much other product that we can't fit one of our nicest pieces in the store. And there's a storm coming. We've put ourselves, as Sal always says, in a "Please mister, help me out?' situation with a very valuable piece that should have landed us in a 'give us one night with your daughter and a week with your son' position. Which is why I still believe that it's one-time 40 goal scorer (which I think officially becomes part of your name when you do it) and impending RFA Jeff Carter who needs to be the piece that goes. He's great, and he can score.

Gagne update, Zherdev speaks about return to NHL

Photo:

The whirlwind situation between the Flyers and disgruntled left-winger Simon Gagne took another turn Wednesday afternoon. According to Gagne’s agent Bob Sauve, the Flyers have given his client permission to speak to other teams regarding interest. “The Flyers have given us permission to talk to teams and we’ve been doing that, and they’ve been talking to teams, but at this point there’s not much else to say,” Sauve told ESPN.com. “We’ll keep talking and see if we can find a good place for Simon.” Gagne is due to enter his final year of his current contract that pays him $5.25 million and also has a no-trade clause.  So, the only good that comes out of this ugly situation is Gagne has complete control of his destiny. Which he’s rightfully earned. Newly acquired left-winger Nikolai Zherdev spoke via conference call Wed.

Zherdev says he has something to prove

Transcript from today's conference call with Nikolai Zherdev: Q: Why Philadelphia? “First of all, it was a very good offer from Philadelphia for me. Also I think Philadelphia is a good fit for my hockey system.” Q: Do you feel you have something to prove in your return to the NHL? “I’m very happy to be back in the NHL. I had some difficulty last season signing a contract in the NHL and I made the decision to stay one season in Russia. But basically my goal is to come to the NHL and be one of the best players, and play every night, and show everybody I’m ready and that I’m an NHL player.” Q: A lot has been written over the past year about your reputation – can you respond to that? “First of all, I don’t pay much attention to the people who write about me about bad things or good things.
