Meltzer's Musings: 7-14-10

The one-year, $1.075 million deal the Flyers reached to avoid arbitration with Dan Carcillo is a good deal for both sides. Essentially, Carcillo gave in on salary, realizing that if he was going to have a job with the club this season, he had to accept a salary the club could fit within the salary cap once it makes other moves to get cap compliant. Even if he had won his arbitration case, Ca

A Public Service Announcement on Public Transportation

Photo:

Good Morning, Those of you who take public transportation, I applaud you. Not only are you reducing our generation's carbon foot print, you're also, on a daily basis, resisting the urge to fucking strangle dozens of people on your morning commute. Oh don't give me that. The person who comes and stands right next to you on the abandoned train platform, the person who for some reason decides to sit in your seat on the bus, the person who must have gotten some add-on because there's no chance your iPod could play Calypso music that loudly. You're heroes.

2014 NCAA Frozen Four Coming to Philly

-The NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Committee has announced the host sites for the 2013 and 2014 Men’s Frozen Four. Pittsburgh, Pa., will host the 2013 Men’s Frozen Four at the Consol Energy Center, while Philadelphia, Pa., will serve as the host for the 2014 championship at the Wachovia Center. The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) will serve as the host for the event on April 10 and 12, 2014. "The Frozen Four is one of the premiere national championships and a showcase of hockey's top collegiate student athletes," said Comcast-Spectacor President Peter Luukko. "This awarding of the event is a true testament to both the development of ice hockey programs here in the Greater Philadelphia Region which has produced young ice hockey players who have gone on to compete in the Frozen Four, as well as to the die-hard hockey fans here in our region who will be able to show their passion for the sport of hockey on the national stage. We would also like to congratulate the ECAC on their tireless efforts in helping to bring the event to Philadelphia." “We are extremely excited about the opportunity to host the 2014 Frozen Four,” said ECAC Commissioner Rudy Keeling. “To do so in such a wonderful facility in a completely sports-minded community will go a long way toward making this one of the best Frozen Fours in recent history.” The Wachovia Center, home to the National Hockey League’s Easten Conference Champion Philadelphia Flyers, will also host the 2011 NCAA Wrestling Championships, as well as the 2013 NCAA Men's First and Second Round Basketball Tournament Games. The Wachovia Center, which opened in 1996, has already hosted the 2000 NCAA Women's Final Four, the 2001 NCAA Men's East Regionals, the 2006 and 2009 NCAA Men's First and Second Round Basketball Games.

Gagne deserves a better replacement than Zherdev

Photo:

Simon Gagne celebrates after scoring the game-winning overtime goal in Game 6 of the 2004 Eastern Conference Finals against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Its become a forgone conclusion that one of the longest tenured athletes to ever play in Philadelphia, will have a bitter ending. Simon Gagne, who was drafted by the Flyers way back in 1998, has been with the organization ever since and looks to be on his way out the back door. The 30-year old left-winger has been with the Flyers since the 1999-2000 season where he made the NHL’s All-Rookie team after notching 20 goals and 48 points. With the Flyers recent signing of unrestricted free agent winger Nikolai Zherdev, formerly of the New York Rangers, to a one-year $2 million deal. Zherdev, 25, last played in the NHL in 2008-09 campaign with the Rangers where he scored 23 goals and 58 points in 82 games. The Zherdev signing put the Flyers over the $59.4 mill cap by $1.4 million. So regardless of the Zherdev arrival the Flyers had to shed salary somewhere.   The signing of Zherdev left fans and personal around the NHL a bit puzzled due to the well-known and respected playing style the Flyers are famous for.

How to Beat the Salary Cap?

Photo:

Late last week, the Flyers signed former NHL forward Nikolai Zherdev. As speculated in my previous post and pretty much everywhere in the hockey blogger community, Zherdev would be getting a small contract from a club who was willing to take a gamble on the young forward. The Flyers were rumored to be in the

Carcillo's New Deal

ON HOLIDAY ... The Flyers avoided going through a future arbitration today as tough guy Dan Carcillo relented and signed a one-year deal worth $1.075 million. That's a small bump from his $900,000 salary of last year and officially makes him part of that exclusive "millionaire" club we all strive to join someday. LOL. I wonder how much all the rumors about Simon Gagne leaving and Nikol

Flyers sign Carcillo, avoid arbitration

The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have signed 6’0’’, 205-pound left wing Dan Carcillo (kar-SIHL-oh) to a one-year contract, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren. Per club policy, financial terms were not disclosed. “We are happy to have Dan under contract for the 2010-11 season,” said Holmgren. Carcillo, 25, recorded 22 points (12G,10A) and 207 penalty minutes in 76 regular season games with the Flyers this past season. He led the team in hits (194) and his 207 penalty minutes also led the Flyers and ranked fourth in the NHL. He also became the first player, alongside Boston Bruins’ forward Shawn Thornton, to be assessed a fighting major in the NHL’s Winter Classic, on Jan. 1, 2010.

Prospect to Watch: Mike Testwuide

I think it’ll be a quick adjustment.  Half-shields, fighting, that’s all stuff that comes with the game. In college it’s kind of frustrating when you can’t do that stuff and you have to hold yourself back. If you’re playing in pros or junior, you don’t really have to hold yourself back from that stuff and it comes naturally. - Mike Testwuide That’s the kind of thing any Flyers fan wants to hear coming from a prospect. He is a free agent signed out of Colorado College , and might be competing for a spot with the big club during this upcoming training camp.
