Hoping for a Master Plan

My celebrity is getting out of hand. A lot of people have been stopping me on the street and asked me 'Why no post about Nik Zherdev?' And I'm all like 'fart.' The truth is that I have no idea what's going on. I don't know what the Flyers are planning on doing with Gagne, and I surely don't know why. If it's a money move I guess I understand that but the addition of Zherdev's $ figure and whatever comes back if that trade actually goes down, unless its really just picks in which case I'd be even more confused, would probably end up equaling around $5M. And speaking of that Ukranian acquisition in and of itself.

Flyers Continue Building, Add Nik Zherdev

Is anyone else as excited as I am that the Philadelphia Flyers signed Nikolai Zherdez ? Obviously he’s not a big name, but you’re not gonna have a team full of all-stars anymore in the salary cap age. Look at Chicago ; they won the cpu and are having a firesale with all of their second tier talent. Meanwhile, the Flyers have added defensive depth, toughness, and now, more offense. Zherdev was a pretty good sniper for a few years on a horrible Columbus Blue Jackets team, and one season for the New York Rangers . He went to the KHL for a year, and now he’s back. fairly cheap too: 1 year for $2M.

Williams sidelined; Hartnell vs. Barkann

A foot injury will keep Serena Williams from playing her scheduled World Team Tennis matches this week. Williams, who plays for the defending WTT Champion Washington Kastles, cut her foot earlier this week. She was scheduled to play WTT matches for the Kastles at the Pavilion at Villanova University on Tuesday. "I'm very disappointed that I won't be able to play in the WTT matches this season,” said Williams. “It is always such a fun experience and I love interacting with the fans in the cities that I don't often have the opportunity to play in during the rest of the year." Williams will also miss the scheduled celebrity half-time match in which she was to partner with Comcast SportsNet's Michael Barkann and face Philadelphia Flyers' Scott Hartnell and WIP's Howard Eskin. Hartnell will now battle Barkann in a special singles celebrity half-time match. Tickets are on sale now at ComcastTIX.com.

This may be the most difficult area in which to cast judgement on the Flyers GM. Players that Paul Holmgren's signed to entry level and tryout contracts over the past 3 years haven't really had enough time to develop into NHL caliber players. Remember, these are the guys who were either never drafted or drafted and never signed by an NHL club in most cases. Perhaps the most tell-tale reflection of Homer's performance in developing young talent can be seen in the Phantoms performance over the past two seasons - and they kind of sucked. Last season the low talent Phantoms went 32-41-7, and the year before, while still in Philadelphia, they finished 13 games above .500 and snuck into the playoffs only to get swept by the Bears in the first round. The truth, however, is that using minor league hockey as a barometer for a GM's performance is directional at best.

Meltzer's Musings: 7-10-10

The Flyers' decision to take a chance on Nikolai Zherdev is a lot more justifiable now that it has been learned that the deal is just for one season and will pay him $2 million. In addition to its potential immediate impact on the lineup, the one-year deal also gives the club the opportunity to evaluate both Zherdev and Ville Leino (who will become an unrestricted free agent after the season) an

Where Is Zherdev's Lifeline?

(Panotch is on Holiday but ... ): Much like fans across Flyerdom, I've had a hard time figuring out just what the Flyers' off-season plan really is. It seems to me, they're throwing darts. They took a chance on d-man Andrej Meszaros, who's had a couple downer seasons in a row, and passed up a number of better players. They've written off the loss in the Stanley Cup Final to a "bad" goal

Adding Zherdev might spell the end of longest-tenured Flyer, Simon Gagne. The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have signed 6’2’’, 203-pound free agent right-wing Nikolai Zherdev to a one-year contract, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren. “Nik is a highly-skilled player who, at 25-years-old, we feel will be a good fit to our core of forwards,” said Holmgren.  “Prior to playing last season in Russia, Nik ranked as one of the top young point-producers in the NHL. We are pleased to add him to our team.” Zherdev has appeared in 52 games with Atlant-Moscow of the Kontinental Hockey League in 2009-10 where he recorded 39 points (13G,26A) and 79 penalty minutes during the regular season. This is going to be a move that will likely cost the Flyers a highly paid player such as  Briere(6.5Mill Cap Hit), Gagne(5.2mill Cap Hit), Carter(5Mill Cap Hit) or Hartnell (4.2Mill Cap Hit). Zherdev, from a talent standpoint cant be questioned; 99-goals 140-ast for over 200 pts is nothing to sneeze at. But he has a reputation of being very lazy and un-inspired when things are not going his way on the ice

Meltzer's Musings: 6-28-10

To say the least, the last few days have been extremely frustrating for the Flyers. With no first-round or second-round pick in the draft, there was a lot of time to dwell on NHL-level roster moves that the team was, at least thus far, unable to accomplish. Nevertheless, the real crunch week of the offseason begins today and, by this weekend, we will have a much better sense of whether the club p
