Meltzer's Musings: 6-29-10

No surprise here: According to Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren, the club issued qualifying offers to all of its restricted free agents -- most notably Braydon Coburn, Dan Carcillo and Darroll Powe -- well ahead of yesterday's deadline. Although he did not comment on the status of the negotiations with any of the players, Holmgren has previously stated that he anticipates being able to co

Meltzer's Musings: 6-30-10

According to reports from Tim Panaccio and other and sources with whom I've spoken today, the Flyers are poised to re-sign goaltender Michael Leighton and have him compete for the starting job next season. From what I heard today, the club would still prefer not to go into the season with Leighton, Brian Boucher and Johan Backlund as their sole options and, as such, is considering bringing in ot

Not About $$ With Hamhuis

I spoke to a couple of the agents in Newport Sports Group this afternoon in LA who represent defenseman Dan Hamhuis. The two sides are not close in negotiations. It's not money. It's not length of contract. It's something less obvious. The problem is the Flyers have two No. 1 defensemen in their top 2 pairs in Chris Pronger and Kimmo Timonen. Matt Carle is not being moved away from Pronge

Meltzer's Musings: Initial Thoughts on Meszaros Acquisition

My immediate thought about the Flyers' acquisition of Andrej Meszaros from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for a second round pick in 2012 was that the club is likely to still be in the market for a shot-blocking defenseman and will deal either Matt Carle or Braydon Coburn, whom the Flyers re-signed today to a two-year contract at $3.2 million a year. I would suspect Carle is the one to go.

Divisional Rivals Got Better

Paul Holmgren's efforts to get a jump on the Flyers' rival teams may have backfired. While Andrej Meszaros is just 24 years old and it is not tough to imagine him regaining the form he displayed in Ottawa, Anton Volchenkov's physical style and shot-blocking prowess were more in line with what the Flyers needed to strengthen the club's ability to protect leads. If the reported cap numbers are corre

Meltzer's Musings: No Choice But to Trade Gagne

There is no doubt that Simon Gagne is still a very valuable player to the Philadelphia Flyers. He showed that during the club's playoff run with his clutch play against the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens after returning early from injury. Apart from his offensive contributions, Gagne is a fine defensive forward. What's more, on a team overrun with centers but lacking proven wingers, the loss

Behind the Scenes

Some thoughts here on Dan Hamhuis and Evgeni Nabokov ... I spoke to a GM late Saturday night about why the Flyers would walk away from Dan Hamhuis right now and why they would trade him to a team that is already better than they are in their own division. This GM told me the "best" offer the Flyers had was a 5th round pick for Hamhuis. They were gonna go back to Philly knowing that was the

Don't Expect Nabby To Sign Early

No surprise in LA that the Flyers got the negotiating rights to Evgeni Nabokov. Don Meehan, who represents him, told me tonight that it was probably "not feasible" to get a deal done by July 1. The Flyers would have to give up a 7th round pick next year if they signed Nabby before that date. Obviously, Meehan wants to test free agency. I think that's the wrong move. Nabokov is the second old

Gagne Agrees to Waive NTC

Eklund was first on this. Flyers asked Gagne to waive NTC. He agreed.
