Flyers announce 2010 preseason schedule

The defending Eastern Conference Champion Philadelphia Flyers announced their schedule for the 2010 preseason today, which features three games at the Wachovia Center and one contest at the John Labatt Centre in London, Ontario. The eight-game preseason slate opens at home with the Flyers taking on their Atlantic Division rival New Jersey Devils on Tuesday, September 21 at the Wachovia Center at 7 p.m. For the seventh consecutive season, the Flyers will travel to London, Ontario to play at the John Labatt Centre, and for the second consecutive year, they will face off against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday, September 23. The John Labatt Centre is operated and managed by Global Spectrum, the public assembly facility management subsidiary of Flyers’ parent company, Comcast-Spectacor. "For the past six seasons, the Flyers have considered the John Labatt Centre our 'home away from home,'" said Comcast-Spectacor President and Global Spectrum Chairman Peter Luukko. "The John Labatt Centre is a terrific hockey building and all of our players enjoy visiting every preseason. A match-up with the Leafs in London is a dream match-up for hockey fans in Western Ontario. It's going to be a terrific night of hockey and a very memorable one for the City of London." The Flyers own an all-time record of 4-2-0 and have outscored their opponents by a 21 to 14 margin in the previous six contests

NHL vs Crazy Euro Swimming Pools

Sorry for being quiet the last few days, I’m on vacay in Europe. No, I’m not scouting for the next great prospect. Budapest and Vienna aren’t exactly hockey hotbeds. Prague is, but there’s a bit more to do there. But while here, I started thinking a bit about various European leagues. The NHL is the best league, but is really the best place for players? As an athlete, what do you look for most? Number one, is competition

Confusion in Waiving an NTC

Photo:

I don't understand all the dynamics involved in Simon Gagne's recent decision to waive his No Trade Clause. The whole thing seems terribly awkward. Here's how it probably happened more or less:   Holmgren calls Gagne's agent. Gagne's agent calls Gagne. Either immediately or after some deliberation Gagne accepts. The news hits the presses.   But why would he do it and what does it say about the Flyers?   If I'm Simon Gagne and I get that call from my agent my first reaction would be a bit of hurt feelings and confusion.

29 Jeff Carter Trades I Just Might Say Yes To

Photo:

I think Jeff Carter is a great hockey player. He scored 40 goals, he must be right? Ok, that last sentence was a little tongue in cheek, but I do think he's a very good NHL center. That being said, we are trying to win the Stanley Cup this, and at least next, season. I'm not sure how much more gas our #1 and #2 (and now our #6) have in them at 35 (and 38). Our defense is our cornerstone and over the next 6 seasons we will go as do Pronger and Timonen. Jeff Carter is our most valuable asset and is going to be one of the most costly players in the NHL if he's allowed to hit the open market next summer.

Flyers Fixing Up Defense

Photo:

So far the goalie sweepstakes has given us nothing.  Dan Ellis’ rights bounced around, and he finally became a free agent, and signed with Vancouver .  While I thought he’d stay in Montreal and compete with Carey Price for a starting job. I guess that won’t be happening, so I don’t have to convince myself that the Flyers should trade for Price .  He’s got too many question marks, and I don’t know if he’s worth the risk. Rising star, or major bust? Anyway, since the whole point is to keep pucks out of our net, the Flyers acquired a pair of defensemen.  Andrej Meszaros and Sean O’Donnel , welcome to Philadelphia . Meszaros has battled injuries, and was stuck in a hockey wasteland for the past three years ( Tampa Bay ).

Flyers Sign Leighton…and Other Thoughts

Photo:

So the Flyers decided to resign goaltender Michael Leighton , for $3.1M over 2 years. If they’re making him a back-up, then that’s fine. But if they expect him to start, then I’m not happy about it.  The only stretch of hockey that he looked solid was the Boston series and the Montreal series. He was horrible in the finals, and during the regular season his numbers are a lot better than he actually looked.  Could he be a really late bloomer that finally emerges as an excellent goalie? I doubt it.  The way things look now, I’m not too happy. Brian Boucher is still under contract as well, making this an interesting situation.  The Flyers are still rumored to be sifting through the free agent pile. If so, they’re probably looking for a real starter.  I love Boosh, and I think he’s better than Leighton , but I guess the Flyers see it differently.  So if we get another goalie, it’s bye-bye Boucher . Admittedly, he’s not the answer to our problems, and he was very inconsistent all season long

Paul Holmgren transcript

Below is a transcript of Paul Holmgren's conference call this evening. Q: Can you talk about the day and whether you’re pleased, very pleased, just OK? “We’re very pleased with what we did. We significantly upgraded our defense with adding Andrej Meszaros and Sean O’Donnell and we feel we have a guy who can play a role for our team that we haven’t had in quite some time, play a third or fourth line role, he’s a bigger body – I’m talking about Jody Shelley – so we’re very happy with what we did today.” Q: Can you talk us through how the trade for Andrej Meszaros transpired? We like Andrej as a player and he had four years left on his contract.

Free Agency, For Me to Explain

Photo:

My initial reaction was the same as yours - what the fuck? But luckily I regained my professionalism (yes, I'm a professional fan, which would make you an amateur, sorry to say) and am ready to tell you why I think the moves that Paul Holmgren has pulled of thus far will work out to our benefit. Jody Shelley - This makes no sense, right? Wrong. Remember how long the playoffs were? Well the regular season is 4 times as long as that and there's way more fighting. Like, totally way more
