East Side Story

Sue, from the Ducks Daily Blog  changed the word’s to the Jet’s Song from West Side Story, and apply it to the Ducks . Corny? Maybe. Just don’t say it to her face, she’ll Fed-Ex a stick right to your face. Anyway, because she’s such a HUGE Chris Pronger fan, I decided to go along with her little game, and change the lyrics to talk about the Flyers. Summer School: OHL Review

Today we're continuing our summer reruns with a slightly outdated look at the OHL, but it comes with a clip of Rob Lowe playing junior hockey so everyone wins in the end. As far as additions to the roster from the OHL all we have is 6th round pick in 1965 Sean O'Donnell, who played for the Sudbury Wolves. Have at it. _________ Running backs come from the Big Ten, point guards come from the ACC, and left fielders come from The University of Miami. But as to where the NHL's superstars come from little is known except for "Canada." Well that's right. A lot of the best NHL talent comes directly from three Major Junior Leagues in Canada that are collectively referred to as the Canadian Hockey League (CHL). They are the Western Hockey League (WHL), the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). As a matter of fact, 16 of the 20 guys on the Flyers roster today came from the CHL

Jim Jackson and the Magical Moustache

A pleasant good evening everybody, and welcome to Flyers hockey. I began watching hockey religiously during the lockout-shortened season in 1994-95.  Eric Lindros was the top young player in the game, the orange and black were returning to the playoffs after a 5 year break, and a lot of the games were on Prism. Jim Jackson was pretty much starting out his career as the play by play man for the Flyers , as the great Gene Hart was finishing his career up. JJ was partnered with Gary Dornhoefer then, and the two made a pretty good team. JJ front and center, with his Motley Crue behind him. Through the years, players have changed, broadcast deals changed, color commentators have changed, coaches have changed, the building has changed, but Jim Jackson has remained. And throughout the years, he was easily recognizable because of his signature mustache

Always Tip Your Server

Web hosting can be a hassle. There’s no way to precisely project incoming traffic, for starters. Also, if your server gets rocked by an influx of traffic or is for some reason experiencing technical difficulties, you want someone  you can get in touch with no matter the time of day. Easier said than done, because even in the age of cell phones, texting, Twitter and Facebook, it can be hard to track down family and friends, let alone the help at your hosting company. Fortunately, we here at FanSided haven’t had those problems since we started working with exclusively with the good folks at  Site5 . In fact, we were almost growing faster than we could keep up with and experiencing some server issues as a result — until they stepped in. Nowadays, we never have any significant issues with our server at all and the Site5 team offers us fantastic support essentially 24/7/365.

On Affiliates, Hitch, Pronger …

Seems the last couple of seasons, the Flyers have bounced around with their minor league affiliates. This upcoming season is no different as they entered into an agreement with the ECHL's Greenville Road Warriors. That club is run by former Rangers' GM Neil Smith. Here's a question and I heard this asked more than once by veteran scribes at the NHL Draft this past June in Los Angeles. Wh

It's been a long time, shouldn'dve left you, without a doubt post to step to, step to, step, step to. Truth is this has nothing to do with slow hockey news because hockey has always come secondary to farting on this blog. Work has got me over a barrel baby, and not in a good way. So I'm reaching into the vault and pulling out something you probably didn't read almost a year ago, because I'm an educator. This week we're going to be re-running a series on the Canadian Hockey League. Some of the Flyers are out of date but so are retro jerseys and no one seems to mind

Flyers add Greenville as ECHL affiliate

The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have entered into a minor league affiliation agreement with the Greenville Road Warriors of the ECHL for the 2010-11 season, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren. The Road Warriors are entering their first season playing out of Greenville’s BI-LO Center. They are coached by Dean Stork, who is in his first season as a head coach after serving as an assistant coach for four seasons with the defending Kelly Cup champion Cincinnati Cyclones. Stork helped lead the Cyclones to the league championships in two of the last three seasons. Additionally, Smith served as the president and general manager of the New York Rangers from 1989 to 2000, winning a Stanley Cup in 1994. “We are pleased to be working with Greenville for the upcoming season,” Holmgren said.

Meltzer's Musings: 8-16-10

One of the more interesting off-season debates among Flyers fans this offseason is whether the club will be able to better its regular-season goal differential from last season. The club has bolstered the blueline, so that should help cut down on 225 goals the team allowed last season. But will the club be able to equal or surpass the 236 goals scored last season? Let's work backwards here and

Meltzer's Musings: 8-14-10

On a slow hockey news weekend, I think now would be a good time to respond publicly to questions that have been emailed to me recently by various Hockeybuzz readers. I will also try to do this this from time to time during the season when there's a mini-break in the schedule. If it was your decision to make, which of Jeff Carter, Danny Briere and Claude Giroux would you play at center and whic

Vanilla Ice Cream Dipped in Chocolate

Every sporting arena is an experience, both on the field of play, and on the concourse. Every stadium has the usual: pizza, hot dogs, popcorn, soda, beer.  Then of course there are the local favorites: cheesesteaks, deep dish pizza, sushi.  Now, I understand that stadium fare is a bit of a rip off, so many people go out to eat before a game.  Some places (baseball and football stadiums) allow you to bring some food inside with you.  But when you’re at the Wells Fargo Center, there’s one thing you cannot skip: the vanilla ice cream, dipped in chocolate. Talk about $4.25 well spent. For that haven’t tried it, you’re missing out.  There are a few different types of ice cream sold at the WFC, all of which are pretty good. But they’re not as good as this one. It begins with a rather normal, waffle cup
