Whether they openly loathe us, or secretly cheer for us, we’re always on their mind.  Want proof? Let’s just look around our own Fansided network. You love me, you really love me! So recently, a bunch of bloggers (myself included) have been doing  bunch of top 5 lists. Top 5 teams to see, top 5 arena’s, blah blah blah. A lot of interesting stuff that is good reading. And time and time again, our own Philadelphia Flyers are mentioned. Let’s start with The Rat Trick , our fellow Florida Panthers blog

Hey, NHL, Leave Pronger Alone

Photo:

Old news: After going to arbitration, the New Jersey Devils contract with Ilya Kovalchuk was canceled for “circumventing the salary cap” . New news: The NHL is “reviewing” other contracts , with similar structures, that had previously been approved. One of those contracts, is with our very own Chris Pronger . This ruling in the Kovalchuk case is complete and utter bullshit. I hate the Devils , and of course I do not want them to have a great player on their team.

Meltzer's Musings: 8-12-10

It has been my view for years that the NHL preseason is too long and winds up resulting in more injuries than it prevents. Years ago, it was necessary for players to spend several weeks working themselves back into game shape at practice and in exhibition games after a mostly sedentary summer. Today, the vast majority of players are in outstanding physical condition year-round. As far as I'm c

Flyers Ain't Off the Hook

Not that this will come as a shock to anyone, but NHL Deputy Commish, Bill Daly, responding to my story on CSNPhilly.com on Tuesday, said the Flyers REMAIN under investigation on the Chris Pronger deal. Keep in mind, the two sides met last fall - almost a year ago - and Pronger's new, 7-yr, $34.45 million deal began on July 1. So, now the agents are up in arms. And what were the odds that

Meltzer's Musings: 8-11-10

I apologize for not getting in earlier to comment on Riley Cote's retirement. My computer froze midway through a lengthy blog on Monday night and I lost what I wrote. Cote is the type of guy who is hard not to root for. He took ECHL-caliber hockey talent and turned it into a three-plus season NHL career, suiting up in 156 regular season games and 3 playoff tilts. He did it through a tremendous

5 Teams I Gotta See This Year

Photo:

Like Pavel Datsyuk , I decided to swoop in, unnoticed, undetected, and make a steal. Frank, from the Rat Trick , wrote a post about the 5 Teams He Has to See Every Year . I’m doing the exact same thing, and I’m damn proud of it. Who's worth watching? (Courtesy: LordOfDesign.com) If you are on the main BSB page, please click on Continue Reading to see the rest of the post. I’m very, very into the division rivalries with the Rangers , Devils , and Penguins , so to keep this a bit more interesting, I’m going to exclude all division teams from this

NHL Met With Flyers on Pronger

Multiple sources tell me the NHL met with the Flyers on Chris Pronger's contract LAST fall, soon after the August hysteria about the league reviewing deals that were previously approved but may have circumvented the CBA. Now comes news that arbitrator Richard Bloch cites the Pronger deal - among others _ as deals designed to elude the CBA in his Ilya Kovalchuk ruling. So will the NHL reopen

Coach Riley

Photo:

You're a Phantom.  For the past year, you've had three-time Stanley Cup winner Greg Gilbert piping in your ear.  You maybe listened once in a while because, well, he won the Cup thrice.  You maybe listened because, well, he's the head coach.  You maybe listened because, well, your ice time could disappear.  You maybe even listened because Gilbert is the only man in the history of mankind to win a Cup with both New York City teams (Isles in '82,'82 and Rags in '94).

Shelley’s Job Safe, Cote Retires

Photo:

In what was sure to be one of the most riveting battles for a roster spot in 50 years in the NHL, there is now a shock ending. Riley Cote , the incumbent, bench-riding brawler has retired, paving the way for the new Philadelphia Flyers enforcer, Jody Shelley , to take his place. Bitter enemies..now: ALLIES (Courtesy: YardBarker) Please click Continue Reading to see the rest of this riveting twist. Riley Cote was only with us for a few seasons, and he is one of few players that probably had more penalty minutes than ice time. His visage was an image of toughness, with his deep sockets looking like permanent black eyes. He played a key role in his AHL stint with the Phantoms , helping them win the Calder Cup in 2005

Thanks for the Blood, Riles

Riley Cote's last shift as an NHL player came on April Fools day. It was against the Islanders in the 3rd period of a game that would see the Islanders end their 15 game losing streak to the Flyers, 6-4. 11:52 into the 3rd Rockin' Riles came out for a decent lengthed 47 second shift and ended it by drawing a slashing penalty against Trevor Gilles - the last player he ever fought in the NHL. It was only Riley's 3rd game of 2010. There's a lot to be surprised about when a 28 year-old retires. Unless I think back to players who unfortunately had to retire due to injury, I can't recall a similar situation. In any sport.
