Meltzer's Musings: 10/22/10

Last night's game was one of those nights that can come back to hurt a team when playoff seedings are determined in the spring. The Flyers controlled many aspects of their game against Anaheim -- a team they should beat, especially when Anaheim is on the road and played the night before -- but they ended up with zero points on a night where anything less than a convincing two points would be ques

I Saw Something Last Night That Worried Me

For the record, that is the "hit" Andreas Lilja delivered on Claude Giroux that created the turnover that led to the Getzlaf goal with less than 2 minutes left to go in the game. But that's not what worries me. In professional sports there's a lot talk about coming together as a team and blah, blah, blah you've heard it all before. Sometimes I believe it's important and sometimes I think just playing a system and shooting the puck into the net is the only thing that matters regardless of whether or not everyone's been through a ropes course together.

Flyers Gameday: Waterfowl Edition

Tonight we get back to hockey.  In what feels like months in between games, the Flyers will take on the Anaheim Ducks tonight in their first game since the shellacking that Pittsburgh gave them last Saturday.  Their opponent tonight has been slow to start this year, as the Ducks still search for their first road win of the season.  Two teams facing off, looking for a much desired win, will really provide some great atmosphere tonight down in South Philly. The Ducks are still trying to find their way this season.  Hell, isn't every team? A lot of pressure is put on their top line of Ryan Getzlaf, Cory Perry and local Cherry Hill native Bobby Ryan to produce every night.  The Ducks seem to go when these three are playing well cohesively, and right now, its not the case.  They still get timely goals from the Finnish Flash, Teemu Selanne, but after that, there is a big drop off in offensive production. The Ducks blueline is a shell of its former self, the keystone to their Cup run in 2007. Gone are Pronger, Niedermayer, Francios Beauchemin.  In are Lubomir Visnovsky, Sheldon Brookbank and young gunner Cam Fowler.  They still get some offense from back their, but the most important thing missing is the missing leadership.  With a eclectic group of forwards, their defense should be the glue, unfortunately for them its going through some serious rebuilding.  The Ducks netminder is Jonas Hillier.  I like him.  I like his murdered-out matte black mask even better.  I'll be staring at that shit like its a McDonald's add artificially painted onto the glass behind the goalies.  Sadly, no ex-Flyers Joffrey Lupul or Luca Sbisa will play tonight.

Flyers Gameday w/ Updates: 10/21/10 vs. Ducks

PREVIEW 8:45 AM ET After stumbling in their last two games and spending the week to date emphasizing conditioning and systems (a polite way of saying bag skates and hard practices), the Flyers finally return to game action tonight as they take on the Anaheim Ducks (2-4-1) at the Wells Fargo Center. Anaheim played last night in Columbus, dropping a 3-1 decision. The turning point of last nig

Since myself, Fran, and Jon began doing figure 8's all over this internet game back in 1991 it seems like we've always been directing the Flyers to look across the street for inspiration, but today is the day that another Philadelphia team needs to finally look to the Flyers. Look at them as a guiding light, a sign that sometimes the most impossible odds can be overcome. Even in Philadelphia.  I've always assumed that the baseball player's day goes something like this: 6AM - Leave Bar/Strip Club 2PM - Team Brunch 3PM - Movies/Bowling/Bar 6PM - Batting Practice Well, we've got something for the Phils to watch during the 3PM entertainment time slot that they usually waste on getting drunk or playing Medal of Honor, or both: (actually click on this and try not to watch the entire thing…it's impossible) And the Flyers had Michael Leighton, not Roy Halladay, Roy Oswalt, and Cole Hamels.
