Meltzer’s Musings: Expectations for Schenn

Later this week, I plan to write a blog looking at why I don't think the Flyers offense will necessarily drop off next season by nearly as much as some folks have predicted. I do expect a decrease in the number of goals scored at even strength but I think the power play will be better than it was last season even if it doesn't get back to the 20 percent or better marks it enjoyed in the three cons

Tip to all you kids out there: don't get traded to Philadelphia for a sexual looking man. Difficult odds to overcome, they are. Just before the trade deadline in 2009, Flyers general manager P Diddy Holmgren made a bold move in which he traded a guy with 21 points for a guy with 10 points over the matter of saving $400k.

Holmgren: Flyers have no trade package for Stamkos

Flyers GM Paul Holmgren told me earlier today that, contrary to reports, the Flyers do not have a trade package in place for Steven Stamkos if a deal between the start center and the Tampa Bay Lightning falls apart. “I have no … idea where that’s coming from, none,” Holmgren told the Courier-Post on Tuesday amid reports that the Flyers have prepared a trade package for Stamkos, who is still without a contract . “He belongs to the Tampa Bay Lightning and I can’t imagine any way he won’t continue to belong to them

Lot's of expectations for this guy. (Courtesy: ducks2nucks.blogspot.com)     We’ve seen much, much more change in the Flyers roster than any other team in our division.  Last year, we destroyed all of the other teams in the Atlantic, rolling up a 17-4-3 record. I have serious doubts about us having that kind of success in the upcoming season. I don’t know if or when the new group of players will really mesh and form a good team

Report: Flyers violated CBA in Talbot deal

The Flyers violated the NHL's Collective Bargaining Agreement when they signed free agent Max Talbot to a five-year, $9 million contract on Saturday, TSN.ca is reporting. According to the CBA in the final two years of a contract totaling at least four years, a team cannot pay a player less than half of what he is being paid in the first two years. Talbot agreed to a contract that pays him $2.5 million in 2011-12 and $2.25 million in 2012-213.

Meltzer’s Musings: Waiting Game

My comment on the post-July 1 phase of rumors about the Flyers pursuing Steven Stamkos is the same it was prior to the start of free agency: The team does not have the salary cap space to afford him without creating additional holes on the roster nor is it in an advantageous position to put together a trade that would actually get the team closer to the Stanley Cup. If Tampa is unable to sign S
