Flyers Get Zherdev on one-year deal

Adding Zherdev might spell the end of longest-tenured Flyer, Simon Gagne. The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have signed 6’2’’, 203-pound free agent right-wing Nikolai Zherdev to a one-year contract, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren. “Nik is a highly-skilled player who, at 25-years-old, we feel will be a good fit to our core of forwards,” said Holmgren.  “Prior to playing last season in Russia, Nik ranked as one of the top young point-producers in the NHL. We are pleased to add him to our team.” Zherdev has appeared in 52 games with Atlant-Moscow of the Kontinental Hockey League in 2009-10 where he recorded 39 points (13G,26A) and 79 penalty minutes during the regular season. This is going to be a move that will likely cost the Flyers a highly paid player such as  Briere(6.5Mill Cap Hit), Gagne(5.2mill Cap Hit), Carter(5Mill Cap Hit) or Hartnell (4.2Mill Cap Hit). Zherdev, from a talent standpoint cant be questioned; 99-goals 140-ast for over 200 pts is nothing to sneeze at. But he has a reputation of being very lazy and un-inspired when things are not going his way on the ice

Flyers sign Jody Shelley, Sean O’Donnell

The Flyers' free agent frenzy has continued today with the signings of veteran right wing Jody Shelley and veteran defenseman Sean O'Donnell. Shelley, 34, agreed to a three-year deal worth $3.3 million, while O'Donnell agreed to a one-year deal worth $1 million. Shelley is a 6-foot-3, 225-pound checking-line winger who will replace Arron Asham and could make Dan Carcillo expendable. O'Donnell, 38, is a stay-at-home defenseman willing to drop the gloves and will be a solid sixth defenseman on a unit that includes former Ducks teammate Chris Pronger, Matt Carle, Kimmo Timonen, Braydon Coburn and newly acquired Andrej Meszaros.

Flyers acquire Hamhuis for Parent, pick

The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that they have acquired 6’1’’, 209-pound defenseman Dan Hamhuis (HAM-HOOS) and a conditional draft pick in the 2011 National Hockey League Entry Draft from the Nashville Predators in exchange for defenseman Ryan Parent, according to club General Manager Paul Holmgren. "Dan Hamhuis is a good all-around defenseman,” said Holmgren. “He has been in Nashville since his draft year. He's a guy who can play lots of minutes and he can play in a lot of different situations, from power play to killing penalties. He is another athlete we'd like to add to our team to continue to improve our defense." "Obviously it is sad to leave the Predators.
